Retinol & laser hair removal

Question

I always read retinol must be stopped prior to laser hair removal. However if I use retinol on my face, do I need to stop it prior to laser treatments to other areas I’m NOT using retinol like my legs, bikini, and underarms? I assume this contraindication only applies to area you directly use retinol on, but I don’t want to assume.

Thank you for your question. You only need to stop using the retinol on the area getting the laser hair removal treatment.

I do not have patients stop using Retinol prior to LHR treatments.  The theory behind this is that Retinols remove the outer layer of skin called the stratum corneum leaving you skin more sensitive.  With LHR we are not ablating or causing abrasion to the skin therefore there is no need to stop you Retinol .  If your provider does ask you to hold your Retinol, it would only pertain to the are being treated.

Using retinol on areas you are not having treated with laser hair removal is considered safe. Patients should discontinue retinol use in an area they would like to have treated with laser hair removal a week before the treatment.
