I have existing implants and now I am having a lumpectomy + radiation. What are my best options?

I've had implants for 10 years, with mild capsular contracture. I now have to get a lumpectomy, and am concerned that the radiation will likely cause more severe contracture. What are my options (including permanent implant removal), and the pros/cons of each?

This is a complex question and the answers will vary depending on your plastic surgeon and current exam. In simple terms, sometimes the implant is left in place as a spacer for future reconstruction. In other cases, the implant can be removed and replaced with an expander prior to radiation. A third option, is to have both implants removed at the time of lumpectomy and consider reconstruction after recovery from radiation. You are correct in that radiation can exacerbate capsular contracture and complications related to implant or expander placement. Many other reconstructive options include fat injections after radiation to improve the tissue quality and symmetry.
