This is a large shave excision and likely will leave a scar. I suggest scar gel at this time and speak to your physician about long term improvement after it heals.  You may even have cells at the base of this that the mole can regrow, it may be best to have an excision. Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for your question.  A shave biopsy does not completely remove a mole.  Moles are like an iceburg, you only see the tip of the iceburg.  Since you have pigment at the base of the mole immediately after the biopsy there is a higher chance that the scar will have some pigment in it.  As long as the pathology result states that the mole is normal it is okay to have a pigmented scar.  If the pigment changes in the future or moves beyond the margins of the scar it is always a good idea to visit your dermatologist.
