Is shaving the teeth to make space for dental implants the safe?

I totally understand the hesitation to agreeing to healthy tooth structure being removed. Teeth can easily survive long term if only a fraction of the exterior enamel is removed. It is actually done quite routinely during orthodontic therapy. So it is really hard to say from the info you gave if they are talking about removing .2-.4mm of enamel? Or 1.0-1.5mm? That's a pretty massive difference in the dental world. So knowing exactly what you are agreeing to is essential.
The other option that was presented to you is also still available. Why not explore that option? I think having all the knowledge you can before embarking on such involved dental procedures is wonderful. A great orthodontist could discuss what it would take to help the site for the implant... but may also find that you would benefit in many other ways from their treatment. Could be a huge win-win that you aren't even aware of yet!

Whenever orthodontics can be a consideration, I prefer to make a referral to a specialty practice that does only orthodontics just for an evaluation to explore the different options. Even if you end up not having the orthodontics, at least you will feel comfortable knowing that your decision was well informed.
