My new crown seems low and I can not use my retainer anymore. Any suggestions?

Since your retainer was made before the new crown, it is very unlikely that a previously made retainer will fit the new crown. Sometimes we get lucky and the patient can still use the retainer, but more often than not, the new anatomy of the crown which was fabricated to ideal size and shape simply will not allow seating of the retainer.  If you did not have your retainer with you on the day you had your crown cemented, you should call your dentist and inform them that your retainer is not fitting.Douglas Jopling, DDSDallas, TX area

During the time when the final crowns are made in the lab, patient has the provisional crowns that should be identical to final restorations. The  retainer is adjusted if needed to the shape temporary restorations. The 3 week time period is not enough to cause any shifting of the teeth, so you shouldn`t be concerned about relapse.  Once you will get the final crowns the retainer will be adjusted to their shape, wich means that you will not need a new one.-

Unfortunately it is very common to need a new retainer after a crown is done. If the current retainer doesn't fit I suggest having a new one made. It is also not uncommon to adjust the teeth opposite a new crown. It's not ideal but sometimes it is necessary.
