Lip Line Scar Hypopigmented?

Question

I had a bicycle injury about a year ago that left me with a small scar on the vermilion border of my lip. This scar is not the same color as the rest of my lip, since it is slightly lighter. (I still see some pigment there, but not as much as the rest of my lip.) I am wondering if there are any treatments to regain this pigmentation and to achieve a "crisp" lip line. Thank You!

Often, lip line hypopigmentation and whitening can be corrected with scar revision surgery. Permanent makeup is ok, but can often cause secondary visibility problems with the scar. Permanent makeup does not 'take' as well on scar tissue.

Hi Lia.  Using lasers or surgery (our specialties) in your case is probably not the best option.  As Dr. Weber pointed out, permanent makeup is an excellent option for hypopigmented (white) scars.

Either a scar revision which cuts the scar out and replaces it with a more delicate scar or permanent makeup (essentially a medical-grade tattoo) will typically reduce the prominence of a lip scar. I hope this information is helpful.Stephen Weber MD, FACS
