How to reduce lip augmentation swelling? (photo)

It is not abnormal to experience swelling right after a lip augmentation. This is something that will gradually improve over the next 1-2 weeks. I would recommend refraining from massaging the area further, and having a follow up with your provider. It is not generally advised to massage the area after treatment. You did not mention what filler was injected into your lips.  It is not unusual to have some swelling after any type of lip injection, but since the hyaluronic acid fillers are hydrophilic, it is possible to get more swelling if those were used.  The swelling normally is temporary and tends to begin resolving after about three days.  It can take longer for all of the swelling to go away though.  Ice can be helpful for the first 1-2 days.

However, it is common to have some swelling after lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers which can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. You can help reduce swelling by applying cold compresses to the treated area. As HA fillers are not permanent you can have them dissolved with hyaluronidase if unhappy with the results. Thank you for your question! Most of the swelling will subside. Continue to ice your lips daily. If by the second week, your lips look the same, then see your injector in order to evaluate whether the filler has been injected too superiorly to the lip border or vermillion border. If this was a hyaluronic acid filler (eg: juvederm, volbella, restylane), some of it can be eliminated with hyaluronidase. 

Swelling and bruising are commonly seen after filler injections.  The lips are a sensitive area.  Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero) are hydrophilic- they attract water and cause swelling in the area after injection.  Swelling may take several days to improve.  Ice and sleeping on two pillows often helps.  It's important to contact your dermatologist with any concerns following a filler treatment.
