How to reduce lip augmentation swelling? (photo)

It is not abnormal to experience swelling right after a lip augmentation. This is something that will gradually improve over the next 1-2 weeks. I would recommend refraining from massaging the area further, and having a follow up with your provider. It is not generally advised to massage the area after treatment. You did not mention what filler was injected into your lips.  It is not unusual to have some swelling after any type of lip injection, but since the hyaluronic acid fillers are hydrophilic, it is possible to get more swelling if those were used.  The swelling normally is temporary and tends to begin resolving after about three days.  It can take longer for all of the swelling to go away though.  Ice can be helpful for the first 1-2 days.  

Thank you for your question. It is too soon at 1-day post-treatment to determine what your final results will be. However, it is common to have some swelling after lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers which can take up to 2 weeks to resolve. You can help reduce swelling by applying cold compresses to the treated area. As HA fillers are not permanent you can have them dissolved with hyaluronidase if unhappy with the results. Thank you for your question! Most of the swelling will subside. Continue to ice your lips daily. If by the second week, your lips look the same, then see your injector in order to evaluate whether the filler has been injected too superiorly to the lip border or vermillion border. If this was a hyaluronic acid filler (eg: juvederm, volbella, restylane), some of it can be eliminated with hyaluronidase. 

Swelling and bruising are commonly seen after filler injections.  The lips are a sensitive area.  Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero) are hydrophilic- they attract water and cause swelling in the area after injection.  Swelling may take several days to improve.  Ice and sleeping on two pillows often helps.  It's important to contact your dermatologist with any concerns following a filler treatment.

As for doing it again, I think your lips looked great before you had them done and just because augmentation can be done, should it?  Look at your motivations to make sure you really want this before continuing it.

Swelling after lip injections can be very mild to very severe.  Yours is moderately swollen, but not atypical for only being within 24 hours of your procedure.  Swelling should gradually dissapate over the next week, but there is not much that will make the swelling go down quicker. My patients often use ice for the first 12-24 hours.  Just give it time and it will go down.  If after a week or two, you feel like you are too swollen, I would see my injector for evaluation.

Filler will cause the lips to swell for several days. Usually within a  week or so, the lips will look liek they should after filler with less swelling.

I advise all my patients to follow a "hands off" approach to the treated areas after any filler injections. At the time of the injection treatments, I will massage all of the filler products so they are exactly where I want them. Once my patient leaves the office they have been instructed to wash the area gently and to use sunscreens and moisturizing lotions as needed. For lip augmentation I use Juvederm, Restylane or Belotero (hyaluronic acid fillers) which cause immediate swelling that can be made worse by the patient manipulating the area. Cold compresses and ibuprofen are your bet bets for safely reducing swelling at this time.
