Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus

Juvederm comes in 2 main forms, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus. Both products now come in “XC” form as well, which means that lidocaine has been added to the product for an anesthetic effect with injection. Both products are similar in how they spread out into the tissue a little more than some other facial filler products.  They also tend to absorb more water when injected, and so Juvederm injections can swell more than some of the other products in general. For this reason, Juvederm products are generally not the best choice for treating the area around the eyes. The difference between Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus is the size of the particles, with Juvederm Ultra Plus having a larger particle size, and thus a longer duration of action. In my experience, Juvederm Ultra typically lasts 6-9 months while Juvederm Ultra Plus typically lasts 9-12 months. The softness of the Juvederm family of products generally makes them excellent choices for treating nasolabial folds and the corners of the mouth. These products are also usually my first choice for plumping the lips. Juvederm Ultra is a little softer than Juvederm Ultra Plus, but they are both very useful products for similar areas of the face.

Either one is ok if done correctly

Either one is ok as long as the surgeon who does it uses proper techniques and places the fillers in the correct amounts in the correct spots. The ultra will be softer than ultra plus, but the kiss test may be a tie between them.

Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus

Juvederm Ultra is used to treat lines and folds that are mild to moderately deep, whereas Juvederm Ultra Plus is for deeper lines and folds. It's more the concern you'd like to have addressed rather than what is considered "softer".

Juvederm Ultra has a smaller particle size than Juvederm Ultra Plus and is used more superficially in such areas as around the eyes whereas Juvederm Ultra Plus is used in deeper areas such as the to fill in the deep jowl defects. The Juvederm Ultra Plus tends to last longer.

Juvederm Ultra is to Restylane what Juvederm Ultra Plus is to Perlane

{{ voteCount >= 0 ? '+' + (voteCount + 1) : (voteCount + 1) }}

Juvederm Ultra, Restylane, Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane are all hyaluronic acid fillers with different consistencies and abilities to retain water. They are all temporary fillers that last up to a year and yet are dissoluble with Hyaluronidase, a natural enzyme which breaks up hyaluronic acid. Juvederm is produced by Allergan, the producer of Botox, while Restylane and Perlane are produced by Q-Med in Sweden and are distributed in the US by Medicis.

Juvederm Ultra and Perlane produce a softer fill which is best reserved for the lip and the superficial skin while the ultra plus and Perlane are best used in the deeper skin only.

Juvederm Ultra is to Restylane what Juvederm Ultra Plus is to Perlane.

Juvederm Ultra Plus is used for deeper filling

{{ voteCount >= 0 ? '+' + (voteCount + 1) : (voteCount + 1) }}

As the other physicians answered, the products differ in their density/concentration.  Juvederm Ultra Plus is best used for deeper areas such as deep nasolabial folds, deep marionette lines, cheek plumping, etc.  Juvederm Ultra is best used for more superficial lines, in these same areas plus lip lines, cheek lines and also for lip augmentation.  Juvederm Ultra Plus can also be used for lip augmentation but should only be used by a very experienced injector in this area.

Juvederm ultra and ultra plus

Juvederm Ultra is a smaller particle size hyaluronic acid than Ultra plus. Ultra plus tends to last a bit longer maybe 9-12 months.  They are both pretty soft but I would use a smaller particle product around the eyes.

Ultra vs Ultra Plus - which is Softer?

Ultra plus is a thicker material then the Ultra, so it is a little firmer and is designed for deeper injections.  The Ultra is a smoother, softer product that does well for the lips, nasolabial folds that are not too severe, and finer wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, etc.

As the previous posters have stated the depth on the injection determines which type of Juvederm is used. Also be aware there is a price difference.

Juvederm Ultra is typically preferred for injection into the lips whereas the Ultra Plus is recommended for deeper injection. This is quite similar the the difference between Restylane and Perlane.
