Can Microneedling RF dissolve Sculptra nodules?

RF microneedling has many uses, however I do not recommend it as treatment to dissolve Sculptra nodules. Sculptra works by stimulating collagen production and is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic, biodegradable material (similar to dissolvable sutures). Unfortunately, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, it cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

If nodules or lumps develop after Sculptra, management depends on what is causing them and how long they have been present.

Inflammatory nodules or granulomas are typically treated with steroid injections or in some cases, surgical removal since you cannot dissolve them. This is why in my practice we use Sculptra for skin texture and a biostimulator more than a volume filler. If you inject it for volume, there is a greater chance at lumps and bumps.

Treating the Sculptra nodules with RF Microneedling may actually make things worse by increasing inflammation to an already inflamed area.

Microneedling with radiofrequency is not effective at dissolving true Sculptra nodules. Fortunately, most Sculptra nodules resolve on their own over time. I treat visible Sculptra nodules with injection of low dose steroid and 5-FU, it usually takes multiple sessions separated by 3 to 4 weeks. Microneedling RF is not considered a reliable treatment to dissolve Sculptra nodules. While it can stimulate collagen remodeling and improve skin texture, it does not break down the PLLA particles in Sculptra. I would recommend an in person evaluation to physically examine the nodule.
