Whitening is the only solution if you do not want porcelain veneers.  However, due to smoking the result will not last very long.

If the color is the only issue, teeth whitening will work. In order to maintain, the lighter color having custom bleach trays is a necessity. When you have your own trays, you can periodically buy new bleach from your dentist and as soon as you see the color get darker you can wear the trays for an hour for a couple of days (or more) to re-lighten the teeth.
