Thank you for your question. Tretinoin creams are more emollient then gel based. However, they don't necessarily clog your pores unless you have truly oily skin and are using a very emollient tretinoin, like Refissa. Gel based tretinoins are good for extremely oily, thick skin. However, they can be over drying and irritating for more sensitive skin types. My recommendation is that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon, dermatologist or experienced licensed esthetician and work with them on which type and strength you should be using and how often, so that you receive the best results. I hope this was helpful.
Tretinoin is a type of retinoid, which is a vitamin A derivative that stimulates cell turnover. The nature of this medication decreases the likely-hood that a patient will develop clogged pores. There are many different ways to formulate tretinoin. Cream based tretinoins tend to be less irritating than gel based. Most providers start their patients on a cream based tretinoin or retinol, as patients are able to tolerate a cream base better than a gel.
I would suggest a ceramide moisturizer with your retinoid such as Elevase Moisture Booster with opti-ceramides. Best, Dr. KaramanoukianLos Angeles
