My drain site really hurts when I lay down. The pain is about an 8. What should I do? Is this normal?

I no longer use drains when performing mommy makeover surgery. They can be painful and don't seem to be particularly useful in avoiding seromas.

Drains can commonly cause irritation to a nerve and sounds like what you are experiencing with your drain. I would recommend contacting your plastic surgeon as it sounds like your drain is causing you more discomfort than helping you at this time. If it is still draining a lot your surgeon might consider a topical pain patch/cream to help alleviate the nerve irritation. #PlasticSurgery #MommyMakeover #Drains #recovery #Healing 

Thank you for your question. Drains can cause irritation around the insertion site and inside the body. Speak with your surgeon and discuss your symptoms. He/ she may approve removal due to the discomfort you are experiencing. Have a wonderful day, 

The degree of pain you are describing from your drain site is not typical. Since you have tried different positions with no relief I encourage you to reach out to your surgeon. An evaluation may be necessary to determine the best way to address the situation.

Drains can be very irritating to the surrounding tissue.  The answer of course is to remove the drain.  If the drain is not ready for removal then a topical or injectable numbing cream/solution can be applied around the drain site to relive the discomfort.  Please see your plastic surgeon and ask for a numbing agent for you to use.

I am sorry to hear about the discomfort you are experiencing; hopefully you have informed your plastic surgeon of your situation. The redness you describe may be of concern (sign of infection); it may also describe why you are having more discomfort than what is typically reported.Again, please make sure your plastic surgeon is aware of your situation.  He/she will likely have specific recommendations for you;  hopefully, removal can be done soon. Thanks for sharing your question.After a mommy makeover procedure it is common to have a drain placed in certain areas to facilitate healing.  At times the drain tube can irritate the skin and cause discomfort.  It is also possible for the drain tube to get twisted by movement or by the tape securing it in place.  Many times I have seen patients and with a small adjustment of the tape around the drain helped them feel much more comfortable.  I would recommend follow up with your plastic surgeon to address the issue.Best Wishes

Sometimes the drainage tube can cause irritation to the surrounding skin and cause the symptoms you are having.  Please notify your PS to see if the drain can be removed.
