Nasal splints after septoplasty, are they necessary?

I had a septoplasty weeks ago after having a deviated septum to the right. I was always obstructed on that side. If I could breathe 100% oh the left I was probably 10% on the right. After the septoplasty I noticed all the cuts and stiches were on the left, and the left side was wide open. The right appeared untouched and completely blocked. Also the doctor did not insert any splints on either side, which worries me are they not necessary? He decongested me on the right and but it closed up again

The incision for septoplasty is usually done on the left (at least in my hands) regardless of which way the septum is deviated.  The entire septum can be approached by making an incision on either side.  I do not use splints except in special situations, only about 10-15% of the time.  If you right side airflow is improved with decongestion, then I would think your breathing will improve as the surgical swelling goes down. This might take a few more weeks.  Hope this helps.

If the septum is done correctly splints aren't necessary and the septum will stay straight on its own.  I will use splints sometimes to keep the sinus cavities open if I am doing sinus surgery too. I do use light packings with airway straws so that the patient can breathe right after surgery. My patients notice a significant  improvement 2 days  after surgery.   Follow up with your doctor . If problem continues seek a second opinion.
