How long does Botox in masseter last? How can I understand when i have to make a touch up? My two sides are different, why?

Botox results resolve in 3-4 months and it takes 1-2 weeks for final results. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a facial sculpting expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Botox for masseter hypertrophy is considered "off label" use but it can be used in people experiencing facial discomfort from teeth grinding (bruxism) or people who are looking for a "slimming" effect to their lower face. The effects of the Botox is the same in the masseters as in other, more common, areas of injections, 3-4 months. My patients will request an injection whenever their facial discomfort returns or others notice the lower 1/3 of their face getting "fuller." No two sides of the face are symmetrical. If you have any concern of facial asymmetry, a visit to your dentist for general evaluation may be beneficial.

It is completely normal for our faces to be asymmetrical. Botox is great for masseters, and lasts about 6 months. Everyone metabolizes Botox differently, so as soon as you notice most of the effects have worn off, you are safe to see your provider. 

Botox results when it comes to masseter treatment last longer (usually 4-6 months) then when used for dynamic lines/wrinkles on the upper face (3-4 months). I recommend you followup with your injector and he/she will be able to evaluate your masseters during a physical exam and determine if you need more Botox.

Thank you for your questions. Results from Botox injections at the masseters will last anywhere from 3 to 6 months on average. Asymmetry of the face is completely normal. After a proper examination, some patients may benefit from additional units of Botox on the stronger side. You may be able to determine when you are due for your next Botox treatments by clenching your teeth together and feel if the masseters are strong and bulging.
