Would laser hair removal prevent hidradenitis suppurativa?

Question

Recently I noticed two lesions near my groin area and inner thighs and I suspect it is HS. These are the first signs I have noticed. I was wondering if getting a laser hair removal for my buttocks, groin, inner thighs and under arms would help prevent growth of further lesions? If no, what is suitable for my condition? Let's say I am in stage 1 of the condition. Any suggestions would greatly help me in this hour.

ThThank you for your question. Reducing hair follicles in the aforementioned areas would certainly decrease the follicular irritation component. While it won’t completely irradiate the bacterial component and the apocrine (sweat) glands, it will help keep the areas under better control. Yes, I’d start with a series of laser hair removal treatments. If that doesn’t work then consider Miradry. Miradry shuts down sweat glands which are part of the root issue with HS. Good luck!

The first thing we would do at our office in Monroe, Mi would be to determine if the patient actually has hidradenitis.  If that is truly the case, then yes, laser hair removal can help the course of hidradenitis in terms of decreasing the number of follicules which could become future fistulous tracts.  Laser hair removal does not address the glandular component or the bacterial component.  At Monroe Comprehensive Laser Center, all potential hidradenitis patients first undergo dermatologic consultation and then we develop a personalized plan for stabilization of the disease before hair removal is performed.
