i have had a 3000 graft fue session and i had 65 % of the grafts come out with only 1 hair grafts, 30% 2 hair grafts and 5% 3 hair grafts, i was wondering is this normal or below avarage and how much coverage would it give me based on the picture, bearing in mind i hardly had any hair in that area in the first place id say only 5% was left with 95% having fallen off ? thank you
Answer: Bad FUE If you are a normal caucasian male, then your FUE had lots of missed grafts. In other words, the doctor missed the 2 hair follicle and only got one. Some clinics may call this hair multiplication or cloning (taking partial grafts)Call it what you may, but your 3000 graft FUE will give you less fullness than a 3000 graft strip surgery. If you want to give your doctor a benefit of doubt, maybe the doctor had a reason to harvest only single hair grafts. Maybe you were a FUE 'negative' patient. Some patients are not good FUE candidates. To be clear I am not casting blame on the doctor's skills. You may have been a bad FUE candidate.Dr. Kabaker and Dr. Rassman put it more eloquently in their answers.

Answer: FUE Hair graft density
You have 2 possible scenarios to consider. Some patients have many, if not all, the hair grafts naturally occur in 1 and 2 follicles per graft. This is rare, but it does happen. You often can tell once starting the procedure if that is your case since the team can clearly see the number of hairs per graft.
The other scenario, which is surprisingly common in unscrupulous clinics and/or clinics that dont focus on FUE only is that the grafts where cut into singles to increase the number i.e 1000 grafts where extracted with 2-3 hairs each and then cut into 3000 grafts with many having single hairs. This decreases work load on the team but results arent that good.
Whenever choosing a hair transplant clinic its a good idea to consider places that dont do anything but hair transplants. Also, in the world of transplants you can find clinics that are dedicated to FUE or clinics dedicated to FUT.

Answer: How many hairs for each follicular unit in FUE The normal follicular unit density in a Caucasian is as follows: 20% one hair, 60% two hairs, 20% three or more hairs each. This is an average and it could vary up or down but I am assuming that you are Caucasian. The Asian has a higher percentage of one hair grafts than the Caucasian but at least 50% should have 2 hairs each. Could the surgeon have damaged the hairs and reduced the yield? I would ask him. The 65% one hair grafts reflects either a technical problem of a patient that had the diagnosis of Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) which should be a contra-indication for a hair transplant. You should ask your surgeon to review your records with him/her. I am assuming that this count you gave me is the surgical record count.

Answer: Graft distribution
With FUE harvesting, the surgeon can pick out the particular graft he wants rather than take what size grafts are within a donor strip. You should discuss the rationale for your particular transplant with your surgeon. These days patients seem more concerned about the donor site than the recipient area. It is possible to leave tinier donor scars when harvesting single hair grafts than larger ones. However the availability and distribution of follicular may lead the surgeon to take higher proportion of single, double or 3 haired follicular units.
