The whitening gel needs to break down the stain molecules deep into your enamel. Therefore, plaque, tartar and calculus will block the gel from getting within the enamel structures. Best bet is to have Zoom very soon after a dental cleaning and checkup. At minimum the last cleaning should have been within 6 months and the teeth should be polished just prior to the whitening procedure.

It is absolutely necessary to have your teeth cleaned before whitening. All of the tartar and plaque should be removed. You may need more than one cleaning if you have not been in to see a dentist on a regular basis! You will be much happier with your results after the whitening !
