I have a high bite after a crown but the dentist says I just need to get used to it—does that sound right?

I can't close the mouth as usual. Only the crowned tooth will hit the bottom jaw. None other will. Can't chew or grind from the opposite side as the jaws font align. This is giving me a jaw pain and a headache. Still the dentist says bite ok and I need to get used to the new tooth and then it will be ok. How is the bite ok if I can't even bite from the opposite side now. Thanks
