Can I get laser hair removal if I have active acne and acne scars? (Photo)

Question

I currently have a lot of breakouts on my face and treating them by taking minocycline and using tretinoin cream. I have my first facial hair laser removal in 2 weeks, will this worsen my condition?

You can absolutely proceed with your Laser Hair Removal treatments. If anything, the procedure will help to clear your acne!

It is okay to have laser hair removal on your face, even if you have an active breakout. However, Minocycline is an antibiotic, which means the medication may cause photo sensitivity. You should not have laser treatments until you are off of the antibiotic for 7 days to avoid any negative reactions. After you've been off of this antibiotic, you may continue with your laser hair removal treatments. Also, depending on the strength of tretinoin, I would discontinue use 3 days prior and post laser treatments. Hope this helps!

Active acne isn't a contraindication for laser hair removal. Removing the hairs may actually help improve your acne. Keep in mind, it will take a series of treatments. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Good question.  You can certainly proceed with laser hair removal treatment despite acne breakouts.  There may be a slight benefit to the acne.  Now, you will want to consult your provider regarding possible photosensitivity while on certain medications like the minocycline.  Best of luck!
