Rash and hypertrophic scar - will scar tape help or is laser treatment/injections the only option? (Photos)

Based on what you described, it sounds like you’re dealing with two separate but possibly related issues: a chronic rash on your vertical scar and hypertrophic scarring around the areola. The persistent rash may indicate a localized dermatitis or irritation (potentially allergic, infectious, or autoimmune in nature), and if steroid creams haven’t worked, a short course of oral steroids might be helpful, as your doctor has prescribed. However, I’d also recommend a closer evaluation to rule out contact dermatitis or even a fungal or bacterial superinfection, especially if the area is red, itchy, or flaking.

As for the hypertrophic scars, scar tape (such as silicone sheets) can be very effective, especially when used consistently over time. They work by flattening and softening raised scars and reducing associated itching and discomfort. Some reputable options include ScarAway, Cica-Care, and Mepiform. However, if you've been using silicone therapy and still see no improvement after a few months, additional treatments like laser therapy, corticosteroid injections, or even microneedling with PRP may be more appropriate.

Itching is a hallmark of active scar tissue remodeling and can sometimes persist for months. For symptomatic relief, consider using topical antihistamines or hydrocortisone sparingly—but always under medical supervision, especially near sensitive areas.
