How long before a fat necrosis resolves after a breast reduction?

Question

I am 7 weeks post op breast reduction and have a hard lump above my left nipple. The lump is tender and the nipple is pulling inward slightly at the incision line. I called my PS to ask about it and the nurse told me it may be a fat necrosis. I was told to take NSAIDS, apply heat and to massage it. Any advice? How long before a fat necrosis resolves?

Fat necrosis after breast reduction is not uncommon.  The time period in which it resolves varies and some times it does not resolve and may require surgical removal if it is painful.Dr. ES

Congratulations on having undergone the breast reduction procedure. Fat necrosis may or may not completely resolve on its own within the course of many months. Sometimes, these areas will drain,  usually from an incision line.  I would suggest continued regular follow-up with your plastic surgeon who is in the best position to diagnose and recommend treatment. Best wishes.
