Why did my orthodontist say to change aligners every one week?

I got my Invisalign today and my orthodontist said to move onto a different aligner every 7 days (one week). I have been reading comments on this site and many are saying the minimum is two weeks?? Is it possible that one week is enough? I am very concerned.

Dear wj89,Thank you for posting your question on Real Self. I will do my best to answer your question with the information provided. In general, the general rule is two week wear. Depending on how your doctor planned your treatment, he/she may decrease aligner wear to 1 week. There are a number of different ways to determine an aligner change cycle.  The two main factors are the speed of the movements and individual biology.One could complete treatment with 10 trays every 2 weeks or with 20 trays every week and still finish treatment at the same time.  However, the rate of movement in the 20 tray treatment is likely going to be half the speed or amount per tray.  For various reasons, some doctors like to slow down the movements per tray.The other way to do things is to somehow speed up the way the teeth move so that the trays can be changed faster (use of an accelerator or based upon age).  In this case, if the teeth are able to move faster, the rate of movement per tray can still be the same and treatment actually speeds up.Any of these questions should be directed to your doctor who planned your treatment, since he/she will be the only one who knows how much movement there is per tray.
