Smile line filler issues, long-term (photo)

Question

I had my smile lines filled in Oct '23 and since then I've had some issues on one side. Occasionally the area will look quite red and blotchy (on close inspection there's a few broken capilarilies in the area) and at other times when the redness isn't as prevalent, i notice a grey-ish discoloration. The area also feels quite heavy and tender occasionally. It was filled using a cannula.

The redness and blotchiness, along with broken capillaries, could be due to inflammation or minor trauma from the injection process, especially if a cannula was used. This technique is generally safer and less traumatic than needles, but issues can still arise. The grey-ish discoloration could indicate the Tyndall effect, which occurs when the filler is placed too superficially, causing a bluish or greyish tint. The heaviness and tenderness might be related to localized inflammation or irritation.

I recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment with your injector or a board-certified dermatologist. They can assess the area to determine the underlying cause and suggest appropriate treatments, which might include massage, hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler, or other interventions to improve the appearance and comfort of the area.
