Should I postpone my booked breast augmentation due to stressful events?

Question

Hi, I have surgery booked but I now know that 3 weeks after surgery I will be separating from my partner of 23 years. Im worried that the extreme stress amd upset of this will put me at higher risk of capsular contracture or other complications. Should I postpone the surgery?

First I am sorry to hear that you are facing the loss of a partner, which can be very stressful. Losing such a significant source of support may place additional psychosocial stresses upon the stress already caused by the surgery itself. Postponing surgery is certainly a personal decision that no one can make for you, but I would recommend bringing this question up to your surgeon so that you can both work through this together.

Postponement is a personal decision and in my experience stress has not caused complications in my patients. Elective surgery is by definition surgery which is unnecessary. With that in mind, it is always best to optimize one's health prior to surgery. This includes diet, weight, management of medical comorbidities and stress.

With regards to your specific question, rescheduling might be prudent. Stress can elevate cortisol levels which can then compromise surgical recovery increasing the risk of complications.

Delay will allow you to reach a better place globally and optimize you for the healing process that lies ahead.

I'm sorry to hear of the personal stress you are having.  It may be better for you to wait to have surgery until things have settled down for you.  You want to be able to go into surgery healthy and in a good frame of mind where you can focus on healing physically without excess stress.  I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon.
