Persistent pigmentation after IPL burn – are there any treatment options? (Photos)
In February 2025 I was burned during an IPL hair removal treatment. The burns are on my right arm, shoulder and chest. At the time, my GP advised me to let them heal naturally. I had a 6 week trip to the Philippines booked for April 2025, and she said it was fine to still go. She didn't advise me to keep the affected areas out of the sun and told me they would still heal afterwards, so I went on the trip. Since returning, I've been very careful to keep the affected areas out of the sun, and the pigmentation has faded considerably over the past year. However, it is still clearly visible. I later saw a dermatologist who prescribed 4% hydroquinone, which I used for a couple of months. I didn't notice a significant improvement. I then contacted a dermatologist in London who specialises in laser treatment for pigment disorders. After reviewing the photographs, his secretary told me that he didn't think any of the treatments he offers would help my case and that the only suggestion was micropigmentation. I'm really upset because I'm worried micropigmentation may be my only option, but I'm concerned that as it's essentially tattooing, it may no longer match my skin if my skin tone changes or I tan in the future. Based on these photos, does this look like post inflammatory hyperpigmentation that is unlikely to respond to treatment, or are there any other options worth exploring?
