Hi, I'm Emily a Licensed Medical Esthetician based in Seattle at Amadi Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. IPL can be used for hair removal on the upper and lower lip, but patients with Asian skin tone and existing pigmentation, it needs to be approached very carefully. IPL targets pigment, so when there is increased melanin in the skin, there is a higher risk of burns, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or uneven pigment changes, especially in a sensitive area like lips. For patients with sensitive skin or pigmentation concerns I often find that laser hair removal devices designed for darker skin types such as ND:YAG (1064) are a safe and more predictable option than IPL. If IPL is considered I strongly recommend a test spot at conservative settings, strict with sun avoidance, and proper pre and post treatment care. An in-person consultation with an experienced provider who regularly treats Asian skin tone is essential to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan for you.
