Thank you for your question. I understand that you were diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago and now you’re wondering if PRP treatment is safe for you in spite of that. I can definitely give you some information regarding my experience with PRP which may be of value to you. I’m a Board-certified cosmetic surgeon and a Fellowship-trained oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. I’m also a hair loss specialist and I have developed a non-surgical hair loss treatment called Hair Regeneration, in which PRP plays a very important role.As a facial rejuvenation specialist, we use platelet-rich plasma in our practice quite frequently. We use it everyday and several times in a day. Platelet-rich plasma is essentially a concentration of healing and growth factors that are needed for wound healing. These healing and growth factors are responsible for producing scabs over wounds that allow the skin to heal over. PRP also helps build collagen and blood supply.Use of platelet-rich plasma was pioneered by oral surgeons who used the material to improve blood supply to bone, thus enabling them to install dental implants more successfully. It was then used in orthopedic surgery, and then eventually in aesthetics. Since platelet-rich plasma is a natural treatment derived from the patient’s own body, and is not manufactured by a pharmaceutical or laser treatment company, it does not get the kind of exposure or promotion that more popular treatments do. As such, there are many inaccuracies and confusion about what treatment can and cannot do.In terms of safety, platelet-rich plasma is very safe since it comes from your own blood. Your blood is spun down and the healing and growth factors are separated from it and used to improve skin quality and texture, and also to improve scars. In addition, we also use platelet-rich plasma for treating hair loss, with eyelid surgery, with laser procedures such as fractional CO2 laser, for acne scars, for wrinkles, and for many other types of scars. PRP is a very versatile treatment. Keep in mind though that it is not a perfect, miracle treatment for everything. Ultimately, it cannot replace cosmetic fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse, but it does have a wide variety of uses. Many of our patients, and even those who come to us from all over the world, love platelet-rich plasma. It is a wonderful way to improve and maintain one’s complexion and get that lovely, healthy glow. Since platelet-rich plasma stimulates blood supply, I have observed that getting a youthful, bright glow is something that is unique to this treatment. In fact, many of our patients come back saying that their family and friends constantly compliment them on how much younger and better they look. We have also been able to help people who have lost a lot of tissue and volume in their faces with platelet-rich plasma because the wound-healing aspect of the treatment helps with skin rejuvenation. With regard to your previous diagnosis of breast cancer, platelet-rich plasma will in no way affect your state of remission and will not stimulate any cancer cells to grow elsewhere. Platelet-rich plasma works locally only and is completely natural, since it is taken from your own body. Therefore, I think it is safe for you to pursue this treatment.I hope that was helpful and I wish you the best of luck!
I am so sorry you have a Tyndall effect under the eyes.(It is a blue color caused by fillers when light reflects off the filler. It is usually seen around thin eye skin.)The usual treatment is Vitrase, an enzyme to dissolve hyaluronidase fillers. With filler gone, the blue goes too.What...
I am a cosmetic surgeon practicing in Manhattan and Long Island for over 20 years and I’ve seen a lot of different modalities come and go with the expectation that a certain level of trauma to the skin will result in improvement. There have been many patients who come to me after they h...
PRP treatment procedure is an effective method ofrejuvenating the skin by improving its tone and texture. It does so with lessrisk of developing side effects and allergic reactions. This is because PRP isextracted from the patient's own blood by spinning it in a centrifuge. With the little...
