Braces before or after root canal?

Question

Hi, I have to redo a molar root canals, which will take several visits to the endodontist for that one molar (between antibiotics, the medicine to clean the infection, and replacing the crown). I also want to get Damon Braces but am wondering if I should get them before or after the root canal. Thank you in advance for your response.

Hello, You need to get all your endodontic work (as well as any cavities) taken care of PRIOR to starting orthodontic treatment. Once you get the root canal the tooth can NOT be moved for 6 months. Speak with your Orthodontist about coordinating your treatment, as you may be able to start the braces on the arch that is not getting a root canal.Best of luck!

Hello,If you have teeth that are needing root canals due to active infection, I would recommend taking care of this before starting your orthodontics. In some cases it can be possible to do root canals with braces on the teeth, but it adds complexity and risk. It is also worth considering holding off on the crowns until after the orthodontics is completed, this way the crown could be fabricated to fit the position your teeth will be in long term. But I would recommend completing the root canals first.
