Question

The tooth was broken off at the gum line so it was more like a false tooth with a post. I’m actually out of the country and in Indonesia right now. I won’t be going home for months.

From your description and the photograph it looks like the tooth might not be salvageable. Your best action would be to replace that tooth. If you are away and can't get to a dentist to at least remove the tooth and graft the bone, try to keep the area clean by brushing more frequently and rinsing with mouth wash to avoid infection.

if you are not in any pain, then you could possible keep it as is and just brush it really well twice daily.  if you do start to have pain/swelling, then see a dentist.  always get an x-ray!  then you know you are seeing someone who is concerned about the roots.
