For a recession chin, does a chin forward movement create a visually longer chin even though the actual chin length is the same as before ? If that is true, will it be necessary to design an angled cut in the operation to make the chin actually shorter but visually the same as before ? If that is the case, is there a correlation or calculation between the forward movement and the cut angle ? Thank you so much, Doctors.

When the chin is advanced straight it will look like the face has been elongated. This often is desirable on patients who have short face. However, on patients who have a long middle portion of the face, which is not uncommon, it is essential to angle the cut in such a way that while the chin is moving forward it can also move up to eliminate the ill effect on the face.

In a sliding genioplasty, it is important to appreciate the aesthetic effects of the bone movement on more than just the profile or horizontal view. With plate fixation it is possible to control the vertical dimension of the chin movement almost regardless of the angle of the bone cut. In more severely recessive chins it is often necessary to make an effort to vertically shorten the chin as it comes forward to avoid a vertical elongation effect.

You have a perceptive view. The reality is that bit does depend somewhat on the actual width of the loser jaw and the slope of the jaw's growth pattern. The higher the slope and the more narrow jaw will appear longer with any extension of the chin. This is not the case with a "low angle" growth pattern.each situation does have a solution to maintain the balance.
