Can sinus lift be done after the bone graft? Is it a common practice?

Hi and thank you for your question.The answer to your question is yes. In many instances when you have an upper molar removed and a bone graft placed at the same time, after a period of healing (3 months usually) when an X-ray is taken it reveals that there is not enough bone for an implant . In this case you can do a sinus lift and implant simultaneously if there is at least 5 mm of bone width, because this will support the implant stable enough for the implant and sinus lift to heal at the same time. Doing it this way will minimize the number of surgeries in the area. You could potentially do everything at the same time,extraction,bone graft to the socket ,implant and sinus lift ,but you need to have a CBCT (3D image) taken to be able to plan accordingly.Good luck!Dr. Juan C. It is not uncommon to need a secondary bone graft or sinus lift after a tooth extraction and graft on a top back tooth.  Many times, the sinus lift is done at the same time as implant placement during one surgical appointment

Hi:Sinus lift can also be done after bone grafting.  It's best to wait until the bone graft has healed and take a cat scan of the area to measure the bone.Best,Dr. Maddahi
