Last month, I got 4 porcelain veneers placed on my front 4 teeth. I was told they would look like the temporaries my dentist put on but I found them to be too bulky, opaque, and thick. After 3 unsuccessful reshaping sessions, I finally had them removed last weekend and the lab is currently designing new ones. How should I specifically describe what I want (like composites, more feminine)

Answer: Overdone veneers If you want a feminine smile, they absolutely are too bulky. They seem a little opaque as well, but that may just be the photo. What they are missing is the negative space around the teeth. We call them embrasures - the incisal embrasures and facial embrasures need to be opened up and the outside corners of the teeth rounded to create a softer smile. Take a look at photos of people whose smiles you like. Be sure to look at the front four teeth only though, as Julia Roberts and Heidi Klum have very different smiles in the back even though both are pretty smiles. If they can do it in the temporaries, they can do it in the porcelain. Once you get the temps right, it should be a matter of a few photos and an impression of the temps to let the lab know exactly what you want. It really should be a simple process this time around!
