Last month, I got 4 porcelain veneers placed on my front 4 teeth. I was told they would look like the temporaries my dentist put on but I found them to be too bulky, opaque, and thick. After 3 unsuccessful reshaping sessions, I finally had them removed last weekend and the lab is currently designing new ones. How should I specifically describe what I want (like composites, more feminine)
Answer: Veneers with a Feminine look. Avoid opaque. Typically more rounded anteriors are considered more feminine. You can recontour the teeth to create that look prior to doing veneers. Bulky and/or opaque looh can be avoided by changing opacity of veneers. No prep veneers tent to be bulkier as well. Incisal translucency also tends be appealiny. The whiteness or value tend to increase the opaque look.

Answer: Veneers "Communicating" exactly what you want for your smile is important, but also not easy sometimes! Have your dentist get to exactly something you are happy with in the temporaries in terms of size and shape. Feminine teeth have rounded edges and contours. It's very important to get this right in the temporaries even it takes a bit of tweaking and a few visits. Because once this is figured out at that phase, it is easy to replicate. Your dentist can take photos and impressions of your temporaries to copy for the finals. In terms of the bulkiness and opacity--adding some translucency to the bottom edges of the teeth transmits light nicely and makes them look more natural. As opposed to a straight "white" from top to bottom what we like to do sometimes is a gradation of hues and color. Maybe warmer at the top by the gumline and cooler towards the bottom. In answer to your question, the best way to communicate size and shape is with the temporaries. Get it figured out there with your dentist. In terms of color, that's a little easier. Less opaque with some translucency at the edges. Good luck!

Answer: Overdone veneers If you want a feminine smile, they absolutely are too bulky. They seem a little opaque as well, but that may just be the photo. What they are missing is the negative space around the teeth. We call them embrasures - the incisal embrasures and facial embrasures need to be opened up and the outside corners of the teeth rounded to create a softer smile. Take a look at photos of people whose smiles you like. Be sure to look at the front four teeth only though, as Julia Roberts and Heidi Klum have very different smiles in the back even though both are pretty smiles. If they can do it in the temporaries, they can do it in the porcelain. Once you get the temps right, it should be a matter of a few photos and an impression of the temps to let the lab know exactly what you want. It really should be a simple process this time around!
