There can be functional reasons an protrusive jaw and there can be underdeveloped maxillas. Without surgery, braces mostly affects the position of the teeth. Sometimes, changes can be made in the position of the teeth to fix the bite and somewhat "mask" the lower jaw protrusion. In certain cases, for example, one bottom premolar tooth on each side can be removed so that the lower front teeth can be shifted back behind the top from teeth. Other cases can be adjusted by wearing rubber bands from the top back teeth to the bottom front teeth. If you are really concerned with the position of your chin being too far forward, surgery is your best option. If you are more concerned with your teeth and possibly their "underbite" position, your Orthodontist will be able to present options for you as to how to modify the teeth position and improve the appearance of your bite. Hope this helps!Dr. Pam
