Hi, If you did not meet your weight loss goals with a gastric balloon, you can proceed with other treatments, like a gastric sleeve. The intragastric balloons do not cause any permanent changes to your stomach, so you could proceed with surgery without any significant delay.
That is a great question...Some may tell you that no need to wait after Gastric Balloon (Re-Shape, Orbera or OBalon) to get Sleeve Gastrectomy. But the problem is they the stomach tissue may have tickened and that could increase chance of “leakage” after Stomach Stapling. Therefore I recommend 1-3 months wait time, so the stomach tissue can relax, before getting Gastric Sleeve Surgery!
It is best to wait around 4-6 weeks for the best results. Your surgeon should be able to explain her preference on this. Though there are no structural changes to the stomach from the balloon, there are some changes in gastric emptying and thickness of the wall of the stomach. Those would be best resolved prior to having a gastric sleeve.
You can space these out by about 6 weeks or more... what happens is while the balloon is in place, the stomach becomes thicker, so you need some time to to let that resolve. Or get another balloon as early as 3 weeks
