Laser hair removal. I have been put on Lymecycline to help my spots. Is it safe to keep taking?

I recommend following up with your Doctor about this new medication and recommendations for continuing laser hair removal. Lymecycline can make your skin photo sensitive and it is recommended to stop its use for several weeks prior to treatment. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Although I do not prescribe this drug, it is a tetracycline antibiotic and tetracycline is one of the antibiotics that can cause "photosensitivity" and therefore possibly make the skin more sensitive (and potentially burn) after a laser treatment.  However, there are some newer philosophies that question the legitimacy of this.  There has been a lot of discussion over the last few years as to whether there is any real proof that this drug can cause a problem if you have a laser treatment.  Until better research is  established, it is still one of the drugs on my list of "don't treat the patient if they are taking it."  That being said, you should always inform your provider of something like this, never withhold that information, so they can properly treat you and decide what to do.
