Resistant to Botox and wrinkle relaxers after Covid. Should I consider Xeomin? Can I be immune to its effects? Healthy 45 y/o

I have been having regular dysport injections to my face for approximately 8 years and have never had an issue with resistance. 4 months ago I had COVID for the first time and since COVID, I have tried both Dysport and Botox with absolutely 0 effect. I had the correct units (same injector for 8years) correct placement and tried again with Botox 2 weeks ago with absolutely no effect again. Is there any point in trying Xeomin and what is the success rate? Am I immune? I’m 45 and very fit/healthy.

I'm not sure of the Covid relationship, but some people develop "tolerance" to a particular brand of toxin, but may respond better to others. Considering Xeomin or Dysport is a good idea. Hope this helps! Dr Joseph

Hello! Unfortunately Botox immunity can occur in some patients. If resistance does develop, it can make the botox fade away. My best opinion is to try the Xeomin, Xeomin contains a “naked” form of botulinum toxin. Unlike Botox, which contains accessory proteins, Xeomin is designed to deliver the toxin without any protein additives. You may need to adjust units when trying something new, but it doesn't hurt to try and see how your body reacts to it. Many patients who get injectables should also be aware that they should also have a good customized skincare routine and may need to visit an aesthetician monthly to give your skin some TLC. If the skin isn't prepped, then its a possibility the injectables won't give you the ultimate results you are looking for. The combination of good skin and injectables will give you beautiful results!

If Botox is not an option for you, Dysport or Xeomin are the next options. I suggest dermarolling at home to give the skin Botox-like effects with at-home treatment. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Resistance to neuromodulators is uncommon but it can happen.  You can try to Xeomin to see if you have improvement.  There is a new neuromodulator that is coming to the market that lasts up to six months.  It's called Daxxify. You may consider that if you do not have luck with Xeomin.
