Hair loss due to spironolactone or IUD?

I started spironolactone about 3 weeks ago for hormonal acne. 2 weeks ago I got a Mirena IUD. I noticed 1 week later my hair started to feel much thinner. My doctor had assured my the IUD hormones only caused a localized effect and did not get into your bloodstream. It seems odd an IUD would cause this within 1 week. Is there a chance the hair loss could be from spiro? I might make an appointment to take the IUD out but is there a chance that spiro caused it? Thank you!!

Hormonal changes can cause hair loss but you need to address this with your OB/GYN doctor.  IUD by itself is not always the primary cause.  Drugs such as spironolactone are used for hair loss in women but is not always effective.

The reality is either 'could' have caused it - as hair loss has been reported with both. It's unusual to notice hair loss from a drug in a week. Be sure to speak to your doctor about possibility as well as see a dermatologist to determine if other causes are present. You also need to take into account that Spironolactone can sometimes trigger an initial shed that is only temporary. In general stopping spironolactone for a 6-8 weeks and observing the effects of Mirena alone could help determine which (if any) is contributing to the loss.
