On Accutane 5 years ago and experienced hair loss the last month of medication. The thinning has not stopped. Advice? (photos)

Question

I have gone to three dermatologists and a hair loss facility and no one can figure out why the hair loss is still going on. I was diagnosed with telegen effluvium originally and was told that it would last no longer than 6 months. 5 years later, I am very frustrated and confused as to why it is still happening. I have tried rogaine, spironolactone, nutrafol, laser caps, and PRP. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is still occurring? (For reference, I was 16 when I went on it and 21 now).

I would suggest a full hair consultation with a hair loss expert. You will need an extensive history, blood work, microscopic examination , 2 biopsies  and possibly a DNA hair test.  Hair loss in women is multi factorial.  You may have Chronic Telogen Effluvium,  Female Pattern Hair Loss or an overlap.

Thank you for your question and photographs. I'm sorry to hear about your struggles, but it's very difficult to evaluate your hair through this type of forum. In my opinion, a biopsy of the scalp and hair follicles will be helpful in evaluating the hair follicles and narrowing down the diagnosis. I highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist for further evaluation and workup. Take care and good luck.
