DVT (deep venous thrombosis), which is a blood clot in the deeper venous systems of the body, most commonly the legs, can put you at risk for PE (pulmonary embolus), which is a blood clot that has moved or embolized from these deeper venous systems and has become wedged in the pulmonary vasculature, sometimes causing respiratory distress. Early ambulation, shorter surgeries, venous compression devices prior to induction of general anesthesia, and anticoagulation in the appropriate candidates help manage this risk.Find a board certified plastic surgeon who performs hundreds of Brazilian buttlifts each year. While pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potential complication afterplastic surgery, the risk is very low for individuals who are healthy and haveno prior history of DVT or PE. Moreover, your surgeon will provide compression devices and elastic stockings aftersurgery to minimize the potential for this complication. I would encourage you to speak with yoursurgeon about your concerns, and he or she can conduct a risk assessment andtake additional preventative measures if necessary.
When performing a BBL, I use sequential compression devices on the lower extremities so that the legs are pumped and this can help minimize the risk. Also, patients that I treat are ambulating right after surgery in the majority of cases. However, even with this type of treatment and even when some patients are given chemical prophylaxis, there is still a risk although very low. A clot from the leg can cause a pulmonary embolus but it is very rare.
A DVT Is a blood clot. It means deep vein thrombosis. Most commonly occur in the legs. They can occasionally occur after surgery. If a small amount of the clot breaks off and goes to your lungs that is called a pulmonary or embolism or PE. They are rare but significant complications to any kind of the surgery. If you see a plastic surgeon about surgical procedure be sure to ask him if he takes these issues into consideration and what kind of methods he uses to help prevent them. The prevention of a blood clot is a complicated decision and involves a number of methods including leg compression, early and ambulation and occasionally an injection of blood thinners.

The facial swelling (edema) is due to the IV fluids and the prone (face down) positioning after surgery. This is common and should resolve in a few days. Consult your plastic surgeon if you continue to be concerned by this issue.Best wishes,Dr.Bruno
