Can laser hair removal damage lips?

Thank you for your question!  Laser hair removal should not have any effect on the volume of the lips, even if you have had filler previously. The only risk of hyperpigmentation from this treatment would come from improper use from the laser technician resulting in a skin burn. As long as your technician is trained and using the correct settings you wont have any issues.       LHR on the face/close to the lips should not affect their pigmentation or plumpness. If anything, most LHR lasers will stimulate some collagen and elastin, which can have long-term rejuvenating affects on the skin. Pigmentation will only be affected if setting are used that are too high, causing burning or scarring to the skin. If you feel any excessive discomfort with treatment, definitely discuss with your provider. They may also be able to use a smaller headpiece if you request it in that area. Hope this helps.

Great question, thank you!  Every laser has a specific target or chromophore.  The lasers typically used for laser hair reduction target the pigment (or melanin) in the hair or the vessels which supply the hair follicle.  They should not affect your lips.  With that being said, you can get a burn mark on your lip if the laser is too hot, yet it doesn't sound like this has happened to you.  In regards to filler and lasers, the depth at which filler should be placed is much deeper than typical lasers penetrate so your filler should be safe too! Thanks again for your question.  Best wishes, Dr. Lindsay J Sturm
