Breast reduction - why do I have underarm numbness? (photo)

I'm 5 days post op and seem to be healing well. I had drains for the first 3 days but they were removed at my post op appointment. I've recently noticed that my armpit and underarm (down to about midway to my elbow) is completely numb. I can't feel anything when I touch it. This is the case on BOTH ARMS It's making mobility of my shoulders difficult. What could this be?

Thank you for the question. There could be a variety of reasons why you have numbness.   The most likely cause is from the swelling related to the surgery. However it would be best for you to discuss this with your surgeon and if you don't have a appointment in the near future I would call and get one.

This is likely temporary and will resolve over time. (perhaps as long as a few months).  There can be numerous causes, but the good news is that this is rarely permanent. Discuss with your surgeon.
