Is hanging tissue inside nostril normal after rhinoplasty? (Photo)

Question

I'm 1 week after a rhino septoplasty and I know my nose is very swollen but my inside left nostril there is a hang of tissue that is almost closing my whole nose. It is very annoying because I feel like something is hanging out of my nose! It also does not look normal. Will this go away? Why is it so large?

Hi,Thank you for including photographs. What you are seeing is normal as it takes several weeks for the majority of the swelling to subside after rhinoplasty. If your breathing is obstructed, you should visit your surgeon and have him evaluate you, but I would avoid perseverating over the appearance of the nose until the a few weeks have elapsed.Best,Mehdi Sina, MD

Congratulations on having your rhinoplasty. Healing after surgery takes months to a year for the final product to be seen. Areas of swelling develop and change significantly in the post-operative weeks/months. If there is an area of particular concern - I would recommend contacting your rhinoplasty surgeon's office to be evaluated as they will know what happened during your surgery. Areas of asymmetric swelling can sometimes be with steroid injections, but may surgeons wait several weeks before trying this.

Thank you for your question. 
With any nasal surgery, the name of the game is patience. At one week, we would expect you to have quite a bit of swelling and bruising still noticeable and may have trouble breathing out of one or both nostrils. By the end of two weeks, typically, you will still be swollen but look more like you have a bad cold, rather than post surgical. Swelling can take up to a year to be completely gone, however, by 9 weeks you will look very good and should see big difference from your pre-op pics.
