This Month in Aesthetics: Kim Kardashian’s Botox Is Hurting Her Career, Serena Williams’s Favorite Postpartum Treatment, a Pop Star’s Cancer Scare, and More

Every month, we strive to bring you a balanced mix of breaking news (Jill Zarin talking candidly about her recent facelift, for example) and advice you can always use, like the most effective treatments for hyperhidrosis. Invariably though, there’s an intriguing headline or viral post that doesn’t make its own stand-alone story yet is still worthy of a share.

Which brings us here, to the latest installment of This Month in Aesthetics, an ICYMI recap of industry-molding moments that we’d be remiss not to acknowledge—from Serena Williams’s confidence-boosting skin-tightening treatment to details about the Florida plastic surgeon being accused of murder after performing surgery on his wife.

Doja Cat seemingly admits to a Brazilian butt lift

Despite rampant speculation, the musician has never confirmed or denied having a BBL (although she has previously copped to undergoing a breast reduction and liposuction). But in a since deleted Instagram post, which included several photos of her hips,  the 28-year-old wrote, “My BBL is out of control. I gotta put my cankle fat in my thighs now to even it out.”

A Florida plastic surgeon is charged in the death of his wife after botched surgery

Benjamin Jacob Brown, a Florida plastic surgeon, turned himself in after being charged with second-degree felony homicide in the death of his wife last November. The Florida Department of Health has also placed an emergency restriction on his medical license. The investigation by the DOH revealed that Brown was slated to perform multiple procedures on his wife, including abdominal scar revision, arm liposuction, and lip filler. Per their findings, Brown failed to call 911 for 20 minutes after his wife had a seizure and became unresponsive on the operating table; she was in a coma and on life support for a week before she died. Brown now faces up to life in prison if found guilty.

Serena Williams gets a postpartum skin-tightening treatment

The tennis superstar recently posted a video of herself receiving a radiofrequency skin-tightening treatment on her stomach—along with an extremely relatable caption. “Being ok to take time for myself is something I have always struggled with….On my last trip to Paris a girlfriend of mine treated me to a spa day. She knows after 2 babies I have been self conscious of my tummy. I just had to post this video she took. The results have been amazing. I can see progress with my skin going back to normal and my confidence coming back. I will always love my birthing scars but I just wanted to say thanks to my friend Mia and Nat for letting me know it’s ok to take time for myself away from work and kids,” she wrote.

Kevin Jonas shares skin cancer diagnosis and treatment

Jonas is one of several celebrities opening up about a recent skin cancer diagnosis—and using the experience to urge fans and followers to be diligent about skin checks. The former boy band member shared a video of himself before and after having a basal cell carcinoma removed along his hairline. “Friendly reminder to get those moles checked,” he captioned the post.

Kristin Cavallari reveals she’s had two breast augmentations

On a recent episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Honest With Kristin Cavallari, the former reality star talked all things plastic surgery with her guest, Dr. Jacob Unger, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Nashville, Tennessee. Cavallari, 37, revealed that she’s had two breast augmentations (she had previously admitted to one breast lift but never confirmed or denied implants). “I had my boobs done twice. I got them done after I breastfed Jaxon—my second—and then I got pregnant with Saylor. And so, as soon as I was done breastfeeding Saylor, I was like, ‘I’m just gonna redo them,’ just because they looked awful again,” she said, adding that the second recovery was much easier than the first. She also told Dr. Unger that while she feels like she could use a BBL, she doesn’t think she’ll ever do it and will just keep doing squats instead.

Kylie Jenner breaks down over criticism of her looks

“I hear nasty things about myself all the time. After 10-plus years of hearing about it, it just gets exhausting,” Jenner said in a confessional on a recent episode of The Kardashians. Jenner shared her feelings with older sister Kendall, revealing that the constant criticism had finally taken a toll. “I went on a journey last year, dissolving half my lip filler. Why do people think it’s OK to talk about me? I’ve never cried about this before, but I guess it does affect me,” she said tearfully. The 26-year-old went on to say how she sees comments about how old she looks or how she “f***** up” her face. “Before I even got lip filler, people talked about my looks. It’s so hurtful.”

Apyx Medical’s “Renewing Lives” campaign provides free skin-tightening treatments

Apyx Medical—makers of Renuvion, a minimally invasive skin-tightening procedure—want to make the treatment more accessible to those who need it most. The newly launched “Renewing Lives” campaign pairs deserving candidates with board-certified plastic surgeons who will perform Renuvion for free. (The brand is allocating $100,000 to fund these treatments.) To enter, all you have to do is share your story and explain how Renuvion would positively impact your life.

Kim Kardashian explains how Botox has impacted her acting career

Ironically, on the same episode of The Kardashians, Kim called out her inability to cry and subsequently land successful acting gigs—all because of Botox. “You need less Botox for more emotions—and I don’t have it. How am I going to cry? How am I going to be scared out of my mind? I cannot move,” she quipped to her friends. Still, Kardashian went on to say that doing one movie per year is still part of her 10-year plan, adding that her dream role is a female 007.
