At this point, I'm more scared about the financial logistics of this surgery than the surgery itself.I'm currently on medicaid in New York State (Fidelis Care Medicaid plan) as I recently graduated college and I have very little income and no parents. I'm 99% sure my insurance won't cover it. Right now, I'm going through their bureaucratic insurance hoops, but it's taking too long. For example, before they even will approve a referral to an orthognatic surgeon, that want me to "exhaust all the other options." My primary care doctor scheduled an appointment with an osteopathic DM - a completely useless appointment. And sure enough, "the DM won't be available until early February." If my insurance is even going to cover this, which is unlikely, their plan is to send me on wild goose chase before actually sending me to the necessary, but more expensive surgeon - probably hoping that I just give up before then. From their perspective, I understand I'm under a time crunch though. I'm supposed to start my graduate program in late August 2016 (right now, it's December 2015). Pre-op braces are going to take a 3-6 months and I need time to recover so I can start eating solid foods again and so I can be physically active enough to return to my active every day life (around 9 weeks minimum is what I've read, even more time than that for swelling to dissipate). I'm never going to have this much time off ever again most likely, so I need this done now.I went to a few orthodontists for a price quote and consultation: The prices for orthodontics alone were $6000-8000. People on here and on other online forums have not been very clear about how much they spent - and I think they're doing it on purpose. If insurance isn't going to cover this, then the surgeon could charge at least $10-20k, maybe even up to $40k. And then, even more than that will be billed for all the arbitrary bills the hospital throws at you after the fact. While getting a price quote from an orthodontist and surgeon is possible, it's near impossible to get a price quote from a hospital. I've tried a few times by calling up several hospitals - they either said "sorry, we don't do that" while some just hung up on me. Apparently, the attitude is "screw you for wanting to know how much we will charge you before you accept our services!"If anyone has experience with or knows of any surgeons that do good work and are affordable for people going about this without insurance (including hospital and other treatment costs), please let me know! As long as I can find a local orthodontist that is willing to work with a surgeon, then I don't see the problem in traveling to have the actual surgery. Paying for a few flights will still be cheaper than the absurd prices I've seen for this surgery. I just need to make sure my orthodontist is somewhat local since I expect to need routine appointments for 12-18 months.
