Dermatologic Surgeon, Board Certified in Dermatology

Dr. Suzanne Kilmer, MD is a board-certified dermatologist with over 25 years of experience and the founder of Laser & Skin Surgery Center of Northern California in Sacramento. She specializes in aesthetic treatments, including laser skin resurfacing, skin tightening treatments, and body contouring. She is also known for her skill in dermatologic surgery and creating artistic results. “Natural appearing results are extremely technique-dependent and best achieved by combining state-of-the-art technology, a skilled hand, attention to detail, and an aesthetic eye,” explains Dr. Kilmer. After receiving her MD from and completing her residency at UC Davis Medical Center, Dr. Kilmer pursued a fellowship in laser surgery at Harvard Medical School’s Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. There, she stayed on as a faculty member for several years before returning to Sacramento to open her medical practice. She has won a plethora of awards throughout her career, including the Vic Narurkar, MD, Innovations in Aesthetic Dermatology Lectureship in 2020. She is also a member of multiple professional organizations, such as the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. When not working, she enjoys skiing and surfing with her husband and three children.

Zero Downtime

Many things say they have no downtime, but my fragile skin always needs 2-6 days to recover from any procedure. This was an amazing experience with no downtime. I left the office, barely pink and i was back the work in a few hours

Extremely picky about my doctors - I am most definitely referring everyone I know

New patient... I have been in the medical field on and off for about 10 years now, including working for two extremely prestigious Plastic Surgeons in the Washington DC metro area. (One of which came from North Hollywood). I was introduced to Botox at about 22 years old while working with these two Doctors and LOVED IT! OMG it’s amazing! As well as laser hair removal and CoolSculpting. Be...

$480 Facelift

I went to the Laser Skin Surgery Center for filler to get rid of those mean old lady vertical lines around my mouth. Dr. Kilmer convinced me to try Botox around my mouth, neck and jawline instead of filler. I was very skeptical, but reluctantly gave it a try. Well, two weeks later it looks like I have had a mini-face lift on the lower part of my face. I couldn't be happier with the result. The...

100 Q&A

Q: How many treatments of Emsculpt for abdomen? How long between treatments?
Answered by Dr. KilmerJune 21, 2018

A: Four Emsculpt treatments in about 2 weeks and at least 2 days apart is recommended for the abdomen. Then maintenance treatments about every 2-3 months although going longer or shorter (because some people love it so much!) is ok. More studies are being done for the best timing on maintenance treatments.

Q: Emsculpt for arms and shoulders (off label)?
Answered by Dr. KilmerJune 21, 2018

A: Great question! Arms are a common request! And, yes, the company is working on better applicators for different sized areas. Unfortunately, you cannot use the device over the chest or upper back.  We are using the current applicator to do upper legs but only more experienced MDs with Emsculpt will be willing to try off label areas.

Q: Is the Emsculpt procedure known by a different name? I've tried Googling "Emsculpt" and only see realself.com in my results.
Answered by Dr. KilmerJune 21, 2018

A: Emsculpt is a non-invasive procedure that efficiently builds muscle and burns fat in both men and women. Current body contouring procedures address fat and skin, whereas Emsculpt builds muscle and burns fat for improvement in the tone and shape of the abdomen or buttocks.

Emsculpt uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM®) technology to induce approximately 20,000 forced muscle contractions per session. These forced contractions, considered supramaximal contractions are not normally achievable through voluntary muscle action. Supramaximal contractions increase muscle growth and disrupt fat cells in the treated area. In clinical trials there was a 16% average increase in muscle mass and a 19% average fat reduction after treatment.

Q: Upper lip flip? I had a syringe of Juvederm injected into my top lip, one half in November, second in December. (photo)
Answered by Dr. KilmerJune 12, 2017

A:

I published an article that demonstrated increased lip show with the use of botox – it works really well! There is no problem doing both Botox and fillers together into the lips and, in fact, we do it routinely as the reduced movement with the botox allows the filler to last longer as it is not under as much pressure with puckering.

Q: I have a large tattoo on my scalp. Will I lose my hair if I remove it with laser?
Answered by Dr. KilmerJune 12, 2017

A:

You may lose some hair but the hair removal lasers use a much longer  pulse width so that they can better destroy the hair follicle. The ultrashort pulse widths used to shatter the ink and allow the tattoo to be removed are too short to permanently remove most hairs but they can stun hair growth for several months .
