Your doctor is correct in that underlying saphenous reflux is best treated before doing sclerotherapy of spider veins once reflux has been confirmed by ultrasound. Doing so will result in the best long-term results. In the absence of treating the source of high pressure that has resulted in the formation of spider veins around the ankles, sclerotherapy results are likely to be short lived&nbsp;and in some cases no improvement will be made at all if the underlying pressure is too high. That is not to say, that you don't have the option of doing just sclerotherapy.&nbsp; More likely than not, you will see some improvement, just keep in mind that it may not last very long.&nbsp; Also, in the long run unless you start wearing compression stockings daily, the underlying saphenous reflux will continue to progress and you are likely to develop more veins and more symptoms.

I have spider veins around my ankles which are unsightly. I went to vascular surgeon who did an ultrasound and found that I have saphenous vein insufficiency. I have no other symptoms other than a couple of small slightly varicose veins Dr said that I needed to have these veins eliminated or treating spider veins would be a waste of time.I understand that these bad veins can cause problems later but I’m on the fence about having 3 procedures for what I consider to be cosmetic. Thoughts?

Vein Treatment

Some bruising and slight discoloration is normal after sclerotherapy. Darker discoloration is usually the result of larger volumes of trapped blood within the vein and in these cases it is best to do a micro-thrombectomy which is removal of the trapped blood via a tiny incision.&nbsp; This will allow the area to heal quicker and lessen risk of longer lasting or even permanent discoloration. Matting or the formation of tiny little red veins around the treated site will often go away on its own but may take a year or more and in some cases it can be permanent. Treating this areas with a different sclerosing agent like Glycerin can often help speed up recovery of the matting.

Hi After treating reflux in the deeper veins, I had sclerotherapy (mostly reticular veins) about 7 weeks ago with foam Asclera. Since then, both my thighs (about 50% of them) look almost bluish/reddish and some of the reticular veins injected are dark with reddish matting around them. The PA said that this may go away but it doesn't seem to have improved over the past month. Will this clear up or can there be something done now? Thanks

It is difficult to see the veins discretely on the picture you posted. If the telangiectasias are big enough to inject with a tiny 32 gauge needle, sclerotherapy may help.&nbsp; I find that 72% Glycerin in a&nbsp; 2 to 1 ratio with 1% lidocaine and epinephrine works well.&nbsp; Again; however, the veins have to be big enough to place the bevel of the needle inside the vein. In some cases telangiectasias are so tiny that injecting them is impossible, injecting around them would not work. If you haven't had success with laser, consider asking your treating physician or get another opinion from a vein specialist. Best of&nbsp;luck.

Some bruising and or discoloration of the skin after sclerotherapy is normal and resolves on its own with time. The picture however also appears to show what looks like telangiectatic matting which is a dilation of smaller surrounding veins due to inflammation after treatment. While these often heal on their own, they can take a long time to do so. If it has not resolved after a couple of months you may need additional treatment for these little red veins that cluster to look like a bruise.&nbsp; For this, either laser or sclerotherapy with 72% glycerin can yield good results. I find that glycerin works best.

Hi there, it’s been two weeks and my veins look red and irritated. Is this normal? All other bruising faded but this area looks terrible. Is there anything I can do to help heal this at this point? Thank you.

The picture shows not only small spider veins but also lots of bluish veins called reticular veins.&nbsp; In order to successfuly treat spider veins, you often have to treat any feeding reticular veins first with sclerotherapy. After that, the small spider veins can be treated by either sclerotherapy (72% glycerin works best for small reddish veins), laser or micro-needle radiofrequency.&nbsp; If you recently had treatment, give it at least 4 weeks to see your true results, then follow up with your doctor or another vein specialist.

I've had several schlerotherapy treatments but these showed up after a laser treatment. Is there any way to treat them? I have it on both top of my thighs, it's worse on the left thigh.

Facial veins can be treated with either sclerotherapy, lasers or micro needle radiofrequency. Depending on the type of vein, skin color and other factors one modality is likely to be superior to others. Consider seeing a vein specialist for a formal evaluation.

i had a facelift done in Dec, with fat injection I do not know why but now i have a vein in my face, NOT a spider vein. My dermatologist said there is nothing i can do about it because its an actual vein not a spider vein. is this true? i went to her to get a referral to an actual vein Doctor (she is a nurse practioner not actual Dr. ) It seems to be getting more prominent

Veins that bulge slightly at the ankle are not uncommon since the underlying bone makes them more prominent. If it is causing you pain or its cosmetically unpleasing then it can be treated by either sclerotheapy or phlebectomy (removal through micro-incisions).&nbsp; I would however suggest a venous ultrasound first to rule out underlying venous insufficiency as this would likely lead to new varicose veins over time and may need treatment to minimize symptom progression and formation of many varicose veins.

I have a vein on the outside of my ankle bone its horizontal straight and has been bulging off and on with a sharp stabbing pain I'm not sure how worried I should be about it

Yes this is normal and not unusual at all. There are many things that can predispose you to making new spider veins, most importantly genetics. If you are forming many new spider veins this quickly however consider a venous ultrasound to rule out underlying reflux as this would be a treatable cause.

I have had one sclerotherapy session last year on both my legs as I have had spider veins since the time i was a teenager, now I started having some new spider veins showing on both my lower limbs and my legs, is this normal ? Will i still be having new veins as I grow older? i am a 27 years single female and I weight 55 kilograms.

Sclerotherapy&nbsp;and fillers are both acceptable options for improving the appearance of hand veins.&nbsp; I would say however that filler or fat grafting to the hand to hide the appearance of the veins is better because you can then preserve those veins if need later in life for IV access.&nbsp;

I am a 29 year old woman with very big and noticeable veins on my hands and even knuckles. I am so painfully insecure about this. Can sclerotherapy work for both my veins and knuckles? From what I have read, I don’t think I have “thin” skin on my hands, so I am unsure if filler injections would solve the issue.

Options for making these veins less visible include sclerotherapy as well as filler or fat grafting to the area.&nbsp; I personally feel that it is best to try to preserve these veins and simply hider their appearance by injecting either fillers for hand rejuvenation or fat grafting after liposuction. In this way, you still have these veins for IV access if ever needed and your hands will look younger than just doing sclerotherapy.&nbsp;

The veins on my hand are very prominent. My hands make me uncomfortable over all.
