At age 24, I noticed small itchy papules that look like small pimples around my oral nasal area. I was prescribed several antibiotics to treat what several dermatologist diagnosed as acne-like skin inflammation. When I would discontinue the antibiotics, my skin would flare up. And years later, I went to seek another opinion on my case. Dr. Ulmer in Long Beach, CA looked at my skin under a magnifying glass and immediately diagnosed me with gram negative folliculitis in addition to an inherited case of psoriasis, and he explained that the over use of antibiotics was the primary cause of gram negative folliculitis. I was prescribed accutane and along with several other medications including, a medicated lotion (hydrocortisone), retin A, and benzoyl peroxide. Now, half a year later, my skin has improved tremendously. I'm still taking accutane until advised to discontinue. I'm so happy with my results. For those who are taking antibiotics for an inflammatory skin rash, please discuss with your dermatologist about gram negative skin disorders. Hopefully you will not have to spend years flooding your body with unnecessary systemic drugs. Updated on 19 Jan 2016: Almost a year later. Accutane + subcision.
This is a three step procedure beginning with a solution called Levelan which is applied and stays on the skin for two hours. The next step is intense pulse light (IPL), which acts to stimulate collagen. The final step is to lay under a blue light for seventeen minutes. This phase can be a bit uncomfortable, your skin gets hot, but you are sprayed with cold water. That's it, you're finished. You leave with your skin looking normal, but as the day goes on you start turning red, and day two you are very red, and day three you begin to peel. What I like about this treatment is that it is not so severe that you could have a bad outcome, as it is done three times, about a month apart. But, the best part is that it is covered by insurance for about seventy percent of the cost, as it is deemed cancer preventive. I had it done by a highly regarded dermatologist, and his staff of technicians have been with him for twenty plus years. It is a safe procedure, it will remove discoloration, tighten the skin, improve skin texture and you will lose a few wrinkles!
