Surg Obes Relat Dis. 2014 Feb 15. pii: S1550-7289(14)00055-0. doi: 10.1016/j.soard.2014.02.009. [Epub ahead of print] Efficacy and safety of laparoscopic mini gastric bypass. A systematic review. Georgiadou D1, Sergentanis TN2, Nixon A3, Diamantis T4, Tsigris C4, Psaltopoulou T2. Author information Abstract BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass (LMGB) is a relatively new bariatric procedure; published studies are accumulating in various settings. The objective of this study was to summarize the available evidence about the efficacy and safety of LMGB. METHODS: A systematic search in the literature was performed , and PubMed and reference lists were scrutinized (end-of-search date: July 15, 2013). For the assessment of the eligible articles, the Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale was used. RESULTS: Ten eligible studies were included in this study, reporting data on 4,899 patients. According to all included studies, LMGB induced substantial weight and body mass index reduction, as well as substantial excess weight loss. Moreover, resolution or improvement in all major associated medical illnesses and improvement in overall Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index score were recorded. Major bleeding and anastomotic ulcer were the most commonly reported complications. Readmission rate ranged from 0%- 11%, whereas the rate of revision operations ranged from .3%- 6%. The latter were conducted due to a variety of medical reasons such as inadequate or excessive weight loss, malnutrition, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Finally, the mortality rate ranged between 0% and .5% among primary LMGB procedures. CONCLUSION: LMGB represents an effective bariatric procedure; its safety and minimal postoperative morbidity seem remarkable. Randomized comparative studies seem mandatory for the further evaluation of LMGB. Dr. Paraglie was wonderful and so was his staff especially Flo. I wish I had done this sooner. My goal is another 40lbs! The process was easy. He gives you his cell phone number as well as his assistant's cell phone. If you have complications as I did due to not taking a certain med, he will bring you back to the hospital with no further charge. I am very grateful to he and his staff. I have had no difficulty since. Updated on 18 Jan 2014: Hello!!! I am so sorry that I am just getting the opportunity to update this thread. I am a tax attorney so that lets you know how crazy busy things are right now. lol Any way, the down time for me was not long. The surgery is done with laser and before leaving the hospital, I was able to do several laps around the entire fifth floor of the hospital. Two weeks later, I hosted a family reunion. Initially I was only able to eat broth, yogurt and watermelon. After a few weeks, I was able to eat some fish and baked potato especially sweet potato. I mostly ate about 3-5 forks of food at a time, so I had to eat often. Currently, I am able to eat a tea cup saucer plate full of food. The initial weight came off easy, however, the last 35lbs is becoming harder to get rid of as I have such a sedentary lifestyle. I have not exercised in weeks nor am I drinking enough liquid. A lot of people experience hair loss due to the nutritional value of the food being lost through the bypassed intestine and not being absorbed into the body. This is where I am now. I am taking hair vitamins and hopefully this will help. Doc says that we should double up on vitamins so a one-a-day becomes a two-a-day. However, I am horrible at taking meds. Also, some say that they cannot drink water as it goes down harsh, I am here also. I have to drink crystal light. For a while, I couldn't even drink that so I drank lightly sweetened Koolaid as I could control how much sugar went into the drink. This was new for me as I had not drink Koolaid for years and years. Overall, I would do this again in a heart beat. I cant wait until it is warm outside again so that I can go out exercising. I am from Florida but currently living in Texas. Let me know if you have any more questions. I would love to help! I would also love to hear more experiences of others who have had the surgery. Perhaps I can get some tips!!!!!
I was 298 pounds. My surgery was June 11th, 2009. It is called The Mini Gastric Bypass. I have lost about 140 pounds! I am now 159 pounds. I would not change a thing. It was worth all the money & and the pain.
Hello, Lets start with smoking AFTER surgery. There is no Doctor that I know of that would be OK with you smoking (either before or after surgery). This is whether or not you have had Bariatric Surgery. Before Surgery: Increasd leak rate, pulomonary complications, poor wound healing, blood clots. After surgery (If bypass): Increase risk for marginal ulcers (Very Bad), gastritis, pulmonary complications and above listed issues. In general: All of the bad things that we already know about smoking.
Hello, Yes, in the situation of inadequate loss with subsequent regain, conversion to bypass would be a good option. In addition to this, if you are now having reflux after the sleeve, this would be addressed by conversion as well. Reflux could be an issue in th efuture if not addressed.
Hello, yes, the likelihood that diabetes will go into remission are very likely (around 80-90%). The bypass causes production of hormone from the intestine called GLP-1 (Glucagon like peptide 1 ) that causes this to happen.
