RealStories: The Dangerous Reality of "Black Market" Butt Injections

Here at RealSelf, we’re all too aware of the scary phenomenon of those willing to take the serious risk in seeking illegal injections as a "quick fix" way to give their backside a boost, as VICE found when they took a look at several real stories behind these “black market” butt enhancements in their special report, Buttloads of Pain.

Essentially, the process involves a crude injection of liquid substances via a syringe, ranging from from mineral oil and silicone, to cement and the Fix-A-Flat tire sealant.

Going beyond the sensational headlines in the media, VICE tells the real story of Oscarina Bussa, a 35-year-old salon owner in Miami who paid around $3,000 for silicone butt injections—sealed with Krazy Glue—in 2009. As a result of the procedure, she suffered from discoloration, painful skin peeling and a collapsed, disfigured appearance. She sought help from Dr. Constantino Mendieta, a RealSelf Top Doctor and Miami-based board certified plastic surgeon, who agreed to perform a reconstruction. Ultimately, Oscarina was one of the lucky ones, but is still in the process of undergoing her costly revision surgeries.
