Cankle-Consciousness On the Rise in UK - Is Cheryl Cole to Blame?

Poor Cheryl Cole.  The UK popstar and on/off/on/off judge of the US X Factor has had a terrible month.  On top off losing her dream job and being ridiculed for her unfortunate fashion choices, she now has a new title:  UK Cankle Queen.  Brit doctors blame her for a rise in awareness and wanting to correct it.  Ouch.

According to the Huffington Post and UK's Daily Mail, surgeons there have seen a rise in inquiries for cankle corrective surgery.  They blame Cheryl Cole's US X Factor stint and the abundance of pictures taken that shed her ankles in unflattering light.

Long thought of as an issue that appears when one gets older, "cankles" (the condition where the calf meets the ankle with no tapered or defined ankle), it seems can also be genetic and apparent at any age - just ask 18-year-old Miley Cyrus.  Miss Cole is only 27.

So, what to do?

For those that suffer this condition due to excess fat deposited in this area, liposuction may be the solution for you.

"Fat ankles and calves do good with the tumescent technique with micro canulas, says Beverly Hills dermatologic surgeon Dr. David Hansen. "It is easy to go through and done under local aneshesia so it is very safe. The results are dramatic and almost no down time, " he adds.

The Daily Mail article also cites a non-invasive procudure called laser liposuction as a solution.  UK's Transform Cosmetic Surgery Group (who point at Cole for the surge) utilize this procedure "to thin and re-shape the ankle area."

"The 60 per cent uplift in inquiries is evidence that patients are now seeing that there is an answer to the burden of carrying extra weight on the lower leg," says Transform spokesperson Shami Thomas.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Brent Moelleken warns that liposuction may not help everyone.  "For patients with muscle bulkiness, thick bones or narrow calves creating less than ideal contours of the lower leg, liposculpture is helpful but not definitive."

It's a good idea to pinpoint what causes your condition as an estimated $5,000 (average cost for ankle lipo) cost would be a lot of money to waste with no real results.

Other suggested helpful tips to diminish ankle swelling were to cut down on salt consumption and drinking water (vs. high sodium drinks such as soda).  When all else fails, get strappy ankle sandals.  A $75 strappy sandal can detract from the appearance of the area better than the open stiletto or thong. Cheryl seems to be on this already!
